He claimed right up until his death that he was merely lucky. However, this seems implausible. The odds that a single colour comes up 10 times in a row are 1,024 to 1. In Las Vegas, the number 19 landed an incredible seven times in a row at the Rio Casino, beating odds of over three billion to one. Yet even these odds pale in comparison to those that Wells must have beaten in order to keep winning for four days solid.

Cinematic Charm

Roulette is a game that often comes up in films. There is more action for the camera to capture as compared to a poker game, which mostly involves tired-looking men holding their cards and playing with their chips. The long table, the spinning wheel and even the sound of the ball all serve to make the game appear more appealing. Of course, it doesn’t hurt when James Bond is a regular player.

Bond’s favourite game is Baccarat, and while he will also turn his hand to Texas Hold ‘Em occasionally, Roulette is definitely his second-favourite (who are we kidding, he’s proven himself unbeatable at just about every single game there is, including Craps, Backgammon and experimental computer games with fatal electric shocks in the handle). It’s not something you see him play in the films, but Ian Fleming’s books are detailed enough to show that Bond has his own betting system for roulette, based on a system known as Labouchere. His favourite number for Roulette is 17, and you’re welcome to use that for your benefit when you play live roulette online.

Another lucky number in the movies is 22. This one comes up in Casablanca, when Rick suggests to a young couple in his own casino that they bet the number, and then let it ride when it comes up. The implication here is that the game is rigged but apparently, this is incredibly difficult to manage due to all the moving parts of the game.
